Dietary supplements are marketed and consumed in such a way that they reinforce the belief that (elite) athletic performance would only be possible with the use of these substances. Many of them are attributed anabolic effects that are supposedly intended to lead to performance improvements, especially in strength sports but also in endurance sports. In this context, the marketing of commercial dietary supplements is not infrequently based on false and misleading product information, on manufacturers’ own financial interests, and on an efficacy that has not been scientifically verified in any way.

Since the effectiveness, legality, and safety of dietary supplement use are debated controversially in the literature, this book aims to provide an up-to-date overview of the supplements available and, drawing on relevant literature and scientific research, to substantiate and critically examine their mechanisms of action, as well as to offer a final evaluation.

This reference work is aimed not only at athletes, but also at physicians, pharmacists, nutritionists (ecotrophologists), and anyone interested in a health-oriented lifestyle.
